Redoubt Enterprises 28mm ACW Iron Brigade - 19th Indiana Volunteer Infantry Regiment -

I picked up a set of 24 Redoubt Enterprises 28mm 'Iron Brigade' miniatures a little while ago and recently got around to painting them.  The figures came with a set of 'Bodies Banners' flags for the 19th Indiana Volunteer Regiment so that's how I decided to depict them.

Raised in Indianapolis on the 29 July 1861, , the 19th Indiana Regiment was one of the original regiments in the 'Iron Brigade', part of the Army of the Potomac and was commanded by Colonel Solomon Meredith, seeing action in many of the great battle during the American Civil War.

At Gettysburg the regiment suffered terrible losses at McPhersons Ridge and Seminary Ridge during the first day of fighting.  with records showing 204 men killed, wounded or missing out of 339 men who were brought to the field.

The regiment lost 5 officers and 194 men killed or mortally wounded and a further officer and 116 men to disease during the length of the war and monuments in honour of the 19th Indiana Volunteers can be found at Antietam and Gettysburg.

These very characterful figures from Redoubt Enterprises depict a unit marching and there are a nice mix of legs and heads to add variety. Included is a command comprising of a officer, drummer, two standards and a sergeant.  The heads are separate from the rest of the figure but simple enough to glue on.

All figures except the drummer are wearing the M1858 Hardee hat and Frock Coats as you would expect with the Iron Brigade and the miniatures proved simple to paint up with very little in the way flash and erroneous bits of metal to remove .  After undercoating the figuers black I painted the coat with Foundry Prussian Blue and the trousers light blue using a mix of Ultramarine blue and white.  I use Paynes Grey for the Hardee's and webbing with a mix of paynes grey and buff to add highlights to the black and also for the grey blancket rolls on the rear of the figures.

The figures are mounted on plastic bases, 2 bases of 45mm x 40mm with 6 figures and 4 bases of 45mm x 20mm with three figures.  I used an all purpose filler to texture the bases then a heavy wash of Raw Umber paint to give a muddy, soil look before than adding Javis Autumn static grass.

Finally the flags were cut out, folded and glued together with a bit of PVA glue, a little raw umber was used to hide the white of the paper which could be seen after the two sides were joined together.

At that was that, a great little unit depicting the illustrious 19th Indiana Volunteer Regiment.  Although they have been around for some time, I still think Redoubts ACW figures are some of the best and well worth looking at if you are a fan of the period.
