I was musing to myself the other day about how it would be fun to paint up some Pirate miniatures when, no word of a lie, a customer contacts me with a view to painting 153 Blood and Plunder figures.
After a few exchanges of emails, a slight wait for us at Wild Duck to get a much need holiday out of the way, and a couple of days for the courier to deliver the box, I am now in possession of numerous packs of Blood and Plunder figures and whilst we do have other work on I could not resist making a start on them.
For those of you who may not know much about Blood and Plunder, (and that included me until I got this commission), it is a tabletop skirmish Pirate game by Firelock Games, set in the Golden age of Pirates, the 17th Century. I have to admit that I have not seen the rules but I can tell you that they cover both Land and Naval engagements requiring only a small number of figures and, for navel engagements, a ship for each side.
Firelock also offer an excellent range of large 28mm miniatures to go with the game, and it is these that I have been asked to paint.
Civilian Special Characters Pack.
So this afternoon I decided to tackle the Civilian Special Character pack. You get four figures in the pack and they are well sculpted, needing very little cleaning, only a few mould lines to remove but no flash or erroneous bit of metal to take off.

So this afternoon I decided to tackle the Civilian Special Character pack. You get four figures in the pack and they are well sculpted, needing very little cleaning, only a few mould lines to remove but no flash or erroneous bit of metal to take off.
Each figure was given a couple of layers of white primer and once dried, a wash of raw umber (W&N Galleria Acrylic well watered down), this was just to bring out the detail and a give a little pre-shading.
Once the Umber wash was dry, it was on to the bases. All the figures on a metal wood grain effect base to allow them to work when used on board a sailing vessel. I painted these with Army Painter Fur Brown, then lightly drybrushed them with Vallejo Desert Sand, finally an ink wash was applied, this being Army Painter Mid Brown.
Then it was on to painting the figures. The blister pack comes with a paper insert which shows a photo of the figures painted, so to keep things simple I, for the most part, painted the figures the same as shown on said insert.
The miniatures were really easy, quick and enjoyable to paint up and a double coat of varnish finished them off nicely,
So that's 4 painted, just another 149 to go (plus 12 cannon). Next up, the Marins. Stay Tuned!
